Rhona Hoffman Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition at the gallery of Italian artist Stefano Arienti whose art transforms mass-produced posters and fabrics, book pages, and wall murals into recognizable but fresh images.
The largest work, Mimetic, a wall construction of military green fabrics, including camouflage, and wall paper murals depicting tree trunks and foliage, creates an imaginary forest in the large gallery space.
Guglie del Duomo / Spires of the Duomo Cathedral , a sculpture, consists of souvenir postcards of the famous cathedral in Milan. Arienti cuts, folds, and arranges the postcards to create a miniature mazelike structure of interlocking images of this architectural icon.
Arienti uses a similar process of cutting and assembly to create large wall-mounted collages of cityscapes and architectural details from commercial travel posters. His use of found materials links him to Arte Povera.
Stefano Arienti (b. 1961) lives and works in Milan. His work has been shown extensively in Italy and internationally, in both group and solo exhibitions. Arienti was recently the subject of a major retrospective at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin and the Maxxi Museum in Rome. Arienti has also been included in the Milano Europa 2000 Triennial, the 3rd International Istanbul Biennial, curated by Vasif Kortun.
